Monday links: Leftovers
Published 11.28.2016Thanksgiving is the one Time of year when using leftovers to create new dishes receives some attention. I've neglected the Leftovers-ture section of this site for quite a while now, but I did post a description of the turkey posole we made with leftover turkey.
I also collected Thanksgiving related links for what to do with leftovers for other sites. For the past few years we haven't had a ton of leftovers to deal with after the feast because we were not at home. This season, though, we chose to stay home and cook our own meal. Thus we have the raw material for leftovers-tures, which I will hopefully write up, as I did with the posole.
I have to say though that the "pickings" for leftover ideas was pretty slim. I will note that Food Network apparently derides the use of the word "leftovers," preferring "prepared" or pre-processed. Preposterous, say I. It's food leftover from a meal, and there's nothing wrong in calling it was it is.
- Lifehacker basically links to other sites with recipes devoted to re-using turkey, mash potatoes and other common Thanksgiving dishes.
- NPR offers turkey tacos, which is a simple and tasty way to use up turkey. Our son't dinner tonight will be turkey tacos. The rest of us will eat the rest of the posole made last Friday.
- Pie is a great way to use leftovers. No procedures here, but pro chefs offer tips.
- Eggs Benedict is actually one of the ways we used up some of our leftovers, though not exactly like this.
- The Washington Post offers quite an extensive list of what to do with them
One thing we did learn this year though is that pies made early (the weekend before in this case) must be put into the refrigerator. The pumpkin pie remains may be the first leftover that gets pitched uneaten. In terms of using the pie in some new way, I suppose I could turn it into a soup, but I just made a soup from our leftover sweet potatoes, and pumpkin soup and sweet potato soup are too similar.
