B12 from plants and other tidbits
Published 1.23.2017Interesting and recent items related to food, diet or health.
- Maybe you can get B12 from plants? Scientists may have found a way to add B12 to grain or fava beans via a fermentation process.
- Pasta eaters have better diets? A study done for the National Pasta Association finds that people who eat pasta eat better. As it’s based on self-reported data, it doesn’t matter who funded it, it’s worthless.
- As a spicy food eater, I approve this message. People who eat spicy foods live longer (well, not really, because the result is based on self-reported food diary data which is fiction.) I still like the message…
- Ludwig is team Taubes. He’s the guy who pushed the gylcemic index idea. It’s good to be skeptical of history lessons from activists. In this telling, fat consumption fell from 40% of calories to 30% and that is the root of all evil. But fat intake has been 30% for decades now, the issue is that we eat more carbohydrates. Carb does not mean only grain, but when low carbers use the word it does.
- Taubes latest in the New York Times. Must be nice to always have access to such a huge platform to tout your hypotheses. It’s a rehash of the sugar argument, and it’s no more correct now than it was the first time he gave the spiel.
- Proud PWAG (Person Who Avoids Gluten) here. I will say it again: there is absolutely no reason avoiding gluten should lead to deficiencies in the diet, unless the diet is based on processed foods. It is nice to see it acknowledged that avoiding gluten can mitigate or eliminate symptoms, even in the absence of celiac’s disease.
