Again with the backlash against Standing Desks
Published 3.21.2016The backlash against standing desks continues, as over the weekend a slew of articles (see links in this paragraph) reported on the same meta-analysis. However, the reality is that there isn't a lot of data yet one way or the other. Of course, standing, pedaling or treadmill desks don't work if you don't use them, but they can work when you do— I know this from personal experience.
I've said a number of times that it is also NOT necessary to spend thousands of dollars for a desk. A standing desk can be made with very simply, and s stool can be used for a seat. People get fancier for status reasons, but it's not necessary. Especially to try it out. I've talked about this before, so I won't rehash it all again. But I felt the need to write something because the whole topic irritates me. Mostly because I think the most of the feelings against standing while working stems from not wanting to adopt any change for any reason— but I've ranted about that previously too.
Most of the coverage seems to be a reaction against people who have spent the money (or had their employer spend the money) for a fancy standing desk set up or treadmill desk. I know from experience that once you get used to the set up, and begin to realize the benefits you want to let everyone know. In my case, I realized
My treadmill desk
Sadly, I have once again had to step away from my (homemade!) treadmill desk. Thus, I am once again either standing or pedaling while working but not walking. Since the beginning of this year I had been walking while working each day, and enjoying it. However, circumstances (that will not be detailed on the internet) have once again brought me up out of the basement (where the treadmill is located) to my living room where my recumbent bike and my adjustable height standing desk are. I've talked before about the advantages and disadvantages of the treadmill desk vs a standing desk and so won't do so in detail here. The image at the top of this entry shows both the bike and and the desk.I do miss walking while working, but I am once again enjoying pedaling while working. I still use the treadmill for jogging a few times a week, but for now will not be using it while I work.
