Quick notes on Sunday morning reads
11.29.2015- This is a new one for me: Men eat more to impress women? Cornell researchers have evidence that they say suggests that they do. Women on the other hand, tend to "lightly" and felt "rushed" watching the men stuff their faces. A quote from the link:
Cornell University researchers have found that men tend to eat significantly more -- nearly double -- when in the presence of the fairer sex and that this excess may be "motivated by a hard-wired male urge to demonstrate prowess.”
The study, published this month in the journal Evolutionary Psychological Science, involved observing diners at an all-you-can eat Italian buffet. Men who were dining with at least one woman consumed 93 percent more pizza (the equivalent of 1.44 more slices) and 86 percent more salad than those who were exclusively in the company of other men.
- Is Standing 8 minutes an hour all that's needed? The amount of additional movement needed to affect health turns out to be very minor. Simply standing rather than sitting two hours a day was enough to lower blood glucose levels.
- Brief explanation of the Bristol Stool Scale.
- Why do Americans dress casually? At least in my case, the reason is comfort. There was a (brief) period where dressing formally had some appeal to me, but I got over it. That isn't to say I spend all day in sweat pants, or that I ever did so. For years my "uniform" was jeans and a shirt, which I would "dress up" with a blazer when a slightly more formal look was desired. Eventually I chose to change my uniform, and now am a fan of leggings and tunics. The article makes the point that clothing in the US used to connote societal standing and wealth, but that is no longer the case.
