Getting back into the Writing Habit

Published 1.6.2026: So I am trying to get in the habit of writing again, and publishing on a regular basis. However, I don’t know what to write about. I have a lot of notes from a number of years ago, articles that I meant to write but didn’t.

So I think I’ll take a look at my notes and see what comes of that. Oy. Not sure anything can come of that, in part because all the notes are very old, and most of the links no longer work. Or the people who used to post there no longer do.

And let’s face it, a LOT of the people I used to post about are either: no longer members of the Health at Every Size (HAES, which didn’t survive its purge of Lindo Bacon) or dead. Or not posting. They aren’t necessarily dead, but far too many of them are. Still not an ally to the HAES movement…

And of course, now there are injectible drugs which seem to cause weight loss. Hard to say what the future holds here for those drugs. I am old enough to have known people taking Phen-fen (when that was a thing, before they realized the side effects.)

On an unrelated note, I have still not figured out this program, and thus will link to this article rather then poasting in toto on the front page, because the links don’t transfer. I’m sure there’s a way to do it, but I don’t know what that is.

I suppose one topic I could discuss is “food noise,” something that Glucagon-like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) are supposed to treat. This is the “noise” that people here when they are thinking about the next meal while finishing the current meal. Many fat people claim that this noise is what drives them to overeat, or eat continuously (which can amount to the same thing.)

I don’t think food noise is required to be overweight… though I am becoming convinced that it is necessary if you are going to be super morbidly obese— a contestant on my 600 lb Life, for instance. At that size, you aren’t simply overeating hyperpalatable food, it takes effort to be that large. Effort and money. I don’t think that you can be truly indigent and that size. Weight (despite what the HAES movement will tell you) don’t come from nothing.

I think binge eating disorder (BED) is going to have a moment soon. Because I think to be that size you have to have a disorder. Binging is absolutely a thing, and it’s an expensive habit.

I just realized that I mentioned hyperpalatability without mentioning ultra-processed foods. That’s because I don’t think ultra-processing is a problem. I think the problem is hyper-palatability. I (and mine) didn’t get fat because we ate too much ultra-processed foods (we did not). I think we got fat because we ate too much hyper-palatable foods.

After all, you (the general you) can’t make ultra-processed foods (UPF) in your home, you CAN make hyper-palatable foods (HPF). In fact, all chefs aim to make palatable foods. There is no chef on this planet who aims to make food that his/her audience won’t crave. Or he/she won’t have a job for long. So consider me team hyper-palatability.

Indeed, Kevin Hall (before he was censored and resigned) reran the UPF vs whole food study and found that if the UPF did NOT result in excess calories being consumed over the whole foods IF they were not also HPF. Hyper-palatability for the win! However, HPF is not the prevailing view of RFK Jr.— therefor Kevin Hall was censored, and UPFs remain the primary bogeyman for researchers in the US. It’s also nonesense, but you would expect nothing different when a demented toddler is in charge of the government.

I feel like the above is not new, and that I’ve written it before, but the purpose of this piece was to get me writing again, and it’s accomplished that.
